America is rapidly increasing its military presence in the Middle East. According to CNN, satellite images have shown that Marine soldiers along with 3 American warships are being sent to the Middle East.
These include USS Tripoli, USS San Diego, USS New Orleans. About 2200 soldiers are deployed on these. All these soldiers are part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), which is kept ready for immediate action.
Of these, USS Tripoli is an amphibious assault ship, that is, a warship that carries marine troops, helicopters and fighter planes (such as F-35B). These three warships were with Japan. Currently it is in the Southern Indian Ocean near India.
According to the report of American website Axios, the Trump government is considering a plan to capture or blockade Iran’s Kharg Island.
The USS Tripoli (LHA-7) warship was seen entering the Singapore Straits on 17 March.
Iran war may reach new stage next week
From America’s preparations, it seems that the Iran war may reach a new stage next week. Trump has said many times before that he is not sending troops to the Middle East. Trump had said on Thursday, “I am not sending troops anywhere. Even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you.”
Trump is known for his sudden decisions, so it is not known from his statement what he is going to do. According to Reuters, US security officials said that Trump is seriously considering sending thousands of troops to intensify action in Iran.
There are two big reasons behind this
First reason- reopening of the Strait of Hormuz
About 20% of the world’s oil and gas is supplied through this route. Since the war started on February 28, Iran has almost stopped the movement of ships here, due to which oil prices have increased rapidly.
In the last few days, Trump also asked his allies to send warships to Hormuz, but no country supported him. In such a situation, the American Marines present on USS Tripoli and other warships can become the most important option for them.
If America wants to secure this important sea route, it may have to land troops in the coastal areas of Iran. Iran’s navy has suffered significant damage, so this option is considered feasible and less risky for America.
Some US officials also say that Marine troops aboard the USS Tripoli could be used to capture islands off Iran’s southern coast. These islands could further be used as strategic bases or a means of exerting pressure to prevent possible attacks on merchant vessels by Iran.
Kharg Island is very important for Iran
Kharg Island is about 15 miles off the coast of Iran and from here about 90 percent of its crude oil is exported. Therefore, if America takes control of this island or imposes a blockade there, it can put pressure on Iran to open Hormuz.
However, there is also a big risk in this plan. If the US captures Kharg Island, its troops will come under direct attack and Iran will not necessarily bow down to it.
Some experts say that America does not need to directly occupy Iran’s land or Kharg Island. Instead it can deploy its warships and fighter planes in the Strait of Hormuz, to provide protection to ships carrying oil in transit.
Second reason- Iran’s uranium capture
The second major reason is Iran’s highly enriched uranium. Iran has about 950 pounds of uranium that can be used to make nuclear weapons. It is believed that this uranium is buried in the debris of those bases which were attacked by America and Israel. To secure it, there will be a need to send soldiers on the ground.
Trump’s statements have been changing since the war started on February 28, but one thing is clear. They want Iran to never be able to make nuclear weapons.
The importance of USS Tripoli comes to the fore here. This ship is carrying 2200 soldiers of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, who are stationed in Okinawa, Japan. These soldiers are adept in both land and air combat, raids and sea-land operations.
USS Tripoli is a warship that can conduct air and land operations from the sea. It has F-35 stealth fighter jets, MV-22 Osprey helicopters and special ships to transport troops to the shore.
USS Tripoli will reach war zone next week
