Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is arriving in India today on a 4-day visit. The purpose of this visit is to focus on strengthening new partnerships between India and Canada in areas such as trade, energy, technology and defence.
This is Mark Carney’s first visit to India as Prime Minister. Carney will meet business leaders in Mumbai to promote investment in Canada. During this, investment in infrastructure, clean energy, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing will be discussed.
Before Carney’s visit to India, Canadian officials are now seen retreating from some serious allegations made against India. Earlier, Canada had alleged that India was interfering on its land and indulging in activities like cross-border pressure.
According to a CTV report, a senior Canadian official said that if Canada felt that India was interfering in its democratic process, the Prime Minister would not have visited India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met during the G20 Summit last year in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Carney will meet Modi in New Delhi on March 2
Carney will reach New Delhi on March 1 and will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on March 2. Its main agenda includes starting the negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which has been stalled for a long time.
Apart from this, security and defense cooperation will be discussed. Also, a target has been set to double the trade between the two countries. After this, Carney will leave for Australia and Japan.
The entire tour will start from 27th February and continue till 7th March. The purpose of its visit is to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on America and open new trade routes.
Canada promoting investment in India
India is currently one of the fastest growing large economies in the world. According to Canadian government data, annual trade between the two countries is more than $21 billion.
More than 600 Canadian companies are operating in India. The main exports from India to Canada include pharmaceuticals, gems and jewelery and marine products.
Large Canadian pension funds have already made large investments in sectors such as real estate and logistics in India. According to reports, they have invested 100 billion dollars (about more than Rs 8 lakh crore) in India. Now Canada wants to increase this investment further.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says that there have sometimes been political differences between the two countries, but despite this, Canada will remain a reliable partner of India’s rapidly growing economy.
Possibility of cooperation on clean energy and critical minerals
Energy is the most important issue in this tour. Both countries are talking about a uranium supply agreement, so that India’s nuclear power plants can get fuel. Apart from this, there is also discussion on increasing cooperation on important minerals required for clean energy and energy transition.
Canada is a country rich in natural resources, while India needs reliable and climate-friendly energy sources for its rapidly growing economy. Therefore this area is considered beneficial for both. There are also plans to increase cooperation in LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) and other clean energy sectors.
India’s share in Canada’s total energy exports in 2024 was only $761.5 million. While imports from India were 206 million dollars, now the emphasis is on increasing it.
This tour will reset the relations between the two countries
India’s High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh Patnaik said in an interview in Ottawa that the visit will completely reset diplomatic relations between the two countries and open up huge new business opportunities.
- Uranium Supply Deal: A uranium deal worth about 10-years worth about 2.8 billion Canadian dollars is likely to be signed during the visit, which will meet India’s growing nuclear energy needs. This agreement will support the country’s energy and civil nuclear programs.
- Energy Cooperation: India is interested in enhancing cooperation with Canada in heavy crude oil, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and other energy products. Canada is also looking to diverse partners like India to reduce its energy export dependence on the US.
- National Security: The National Security Advisors of the two countries have already held high-level talks in which it was agreed to appoint diplomatic and law-enforcement liaison officers to strengthen security cooperation.
- Technology, Education and Culture: There is a possibility of agreement on partnership in AI, quantum computing, research and education, which will increase socio-scientific and technological cooperation apart from trade between the two countries.
- Trade and Investment Talks: The talks are set to officially launch the Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which will cover sectors such as textiles, services, investment, agriculture and digital commerce. Last year, Carney and Modi met during the G-7 summit, where both agreed to revive CEPA. Both countries aim to conclude this Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement within the next 12 months, with the aim of increasing bilateral trade to approximately $50-70 billion by 2030.
- Expecting special deals: India wants to buy Canada’s heavy crude oil and other energy products. Also, there is talk of investment in infrastructure like pipelines and terminals.

Indian High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh K Patnaik said that India and Canada are working on improving their relations.
Tension between India and Canada
A year ago relations were very bad. Former PM Justin Trudeau had accused India of having a hand in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023.
In 2024, Canada expelled six Indian officials over allegations that people associated with the Indian government were using violence, threats and extortion against Canadian citizens.
Justin Trudeau said in Parliament that Canadian security agencies have found evidence that Indian government agents may have been involved in the murder. He called it an attack on Canada’s sovereignty and sought India’s cooperation in the investigation.
India completely rejected these allegations and described them as absurd. India said that Khalistani extremists and terrorists are openly active in Canada, who carry out activities against India and Canada does not take action against them.
Both countries expelled many of each other’s diplomats. India temporarily halted visa services for Canadian citizens. Canada also canceled trade missions to India, and travel advisories were issued by both sides. Negotiations almost came to a halt and important discussions like CEPA came to a standstill.
These tensions reached their peak during the Trudeau government, but after Mark Carney became Prime Minister (March 2025), both countries tried to improve relations. Every fourth person in Canada is foreign-born
Canada is among those countries in the world where the number of immigrants has increased rapidly. According to the official 2021 census, approximately 8.36 million (8.3 million) people in Canada are foreign-born, which is about 23% of the country’s total population. This data has been released by Statistics Canada.
Experts say that immigrants have played an important role in Canada’s economy and population growth, but the debate on this issue has also intensified in recent years.
According to the Indian Foreign Ministry, about 16 lakh people of Indian origin live in Canada. And about 3 lakh (about 3.03 lakh) people are of Pakistani origin.

There are 83 lakh people of foreign origin living in Canada, out of which 13 lakh are of Indian origin.
Canada to expel 2,800 Indians in 2025
The Canadian government has deported 2,831 Indian citizens from the country in the first 10 months of 2025. This information has come from the data of Canada’s Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).
According to this, a total of 18,785 people were deported from Canada last year, of which Indians are in second place. The maximum number of 3,972 people were from Mexico.
Not only this, the process of evacuating 29,542 people is currently going on, which includes 6,515 Indians. This means that in the coming time, action may be taken against more Indians also.
The Canadian government has said that many of those deported had criminal cases against them. But there were also a large number of people who did not follow the rules related to refugee claim properly.
