He is the managing director of Hera Sweaters Limited and was also associated with the Central Election Steering Committee of Tariq Rehman’s BNP party in the recent elections. Questions are also being raised regarding his appointment on old matters related to loan repayment. BD News24 report said that his company had not been able to repay the loan of Tk 86 crore on time. A bank official said that how will a person who restructures loans for his own company on special conditions protect the interests of the country’s banking system? He said that no one has the right to insult respected people like the Governor and his advisors in this manner. He warned that when the country’s economy is already struggling with many problems, such action in an important institution like Bangladesh Bank will ruin what is left of the economy. He appealed to all political parties and all sections of the society to protest and said that if the government really wants to create a democratic and discrimination-free Bangladesh then such activities should be stopped immediately. The second major cause of controversy is the circumstances of his appointment. Ahsan Habib Mansoor was made the governor for four years in 2024 and his tenure was till August 2028, but his tenure was terminated in less than 18 months. Before Mansoor was removed, some officials had protested against him accusing him of dictatorship. However, Mansoor had called these allegations a conspiracy in a press conference. Many people in the country are shocked by the dismissal of Ahsan Habib Mansoor. He has 27 years of experience. He has worked in institutions like IMF. He was given the responsibility when there was economic instability in the country after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League government in 2024. When he assumed office the foreign currency reserves stood at $26 billion. By the time he left office it had increased to $35 billion. He stabilized the taka at 122.20 per dollar and adopted policies to bring down the inflation rate from 10.49% by 2024 to 8.58% in January 2026. Shaheer Chaudhary, director of Dhaka-based HSBC, wrote that Mansoor took charge at a very difficult time, when confidence in the banking system was weak, and the situation improved in 18 months. He said that it is disappointing not to give a person with such experience and record a chance to complete his term. NCP leader Nahid Islam also wrote on Facebook that by removing Mansoor, the government has opened the way for loot in the financial sector. He said that after assuming office, Mansoor had achieved a lot of success in restoring discipline in the financial sector and the country’s apex banking institution cannot remain safe in the hands of a businessman like Mostakur.
