Pakistan targeted the stronghold of Taliban leaders
Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on social media platform X that Pakistani strikes were also carried out in Kandahar and Paktika provinces. Kandahar is considered the stronghold of Taliban leaders.
At the same time, the Taliban government has rejected Pakistan’s allegations. He says that Afghanistan’s land will not be allowed to be used for attacks against any country.
In fact, Pakistan has been pressurizing the Taliban government of Afghanistan for a long time to not allow its land to be used by any terrorist organization. Islamabad alleges that TTP is operating from Afghanistan, while the Taliban government has consistently denied these allegations.
War like situation between Pakistan and Afghanistan
The conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan started on 22 February. Pakistan had conducted airstrike in the border areas of Afghanistan.
Pakistan’s Deputy Home Minister Talal Chaudhary had claimed that at least 70 fighters were killed in the action on TTP hideouts in the border areas. Later Pakistani newspaper Dawn claimed that this number had reached 80. In response, Afghanistan attacked Pakistan on 27 February.
The Afghan Defense Ministry had said that Pakistan would be given a ‘strong response at the right time’. The ministry had described these attacks as a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

Why fight between Pakistan and TTP?
- After America’s attack on Afghanistan in 2001, Pakistan supported America. This angered TTP, who considered it against Islam.
- TTP believes that the Pakistan government does not believe in true Islam, hence it attacks against it.
- TTP has deep links with the Afghan Taliban. Both groups support each other.
- After the Afghan Taliban came to power in 2021, Pakistan launched attacks in Afghanistan targeting TTP.

Pakistan ranks second in Global Terrorism Index
- According to the Global Terrorism Index 2025, Pakistan has become the second most terrorism affected country in the world after Burkina Faso, whereas in 2024 it was at the fourth position.
- TTP attacks have increased by 90%.
- There has been a 60% increase in attacks by Baloch Army (BLA).
- Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) has now started targeting Pakistani cities as well.
There has been tension between the two countries before
There is a long standing dispute between Afghanistan and Pakistan regarding the Durand Line. Both countries keep accusing each other of attacks and hiding terrorists. Tension has increased further after Taliban took control of Afghanistan government in 2021.
