BCG Report: Part-2 How much power do Indians have in the US?: Share of Indians in US patents increased 5 times in 50 years

When America wants Nobel, Indian brains come in handy. When it comes to the spelling bee crown, Indian kids hit the ground running. When new patents are needed, Indian scientists take up the pen. This is not just a coincidence, this is the story of the Indian community, which came to American soil as 2%, but has now increased its share in the intellectual world more than ten times. From filing patents to publishing scientific research papers, the graph of the Indian diaspora has grown five times since 1975. 1 out of every 10 American doctors is of Indian origin, providing health services in the most remote areas of the country. Every year, 1,800 new Indian doctors are joining the system, who are at the forefront of meeting the shortage of doctors. It is the same story in the field of research also. 35 of America’s top 50 colleges have Indians in leadership roles. There are 38,000 Indian origin nurses working in America. Won the Nobel Prize twice; 28 out of 34 winners in Spelling Bee in 26 years are of Indian origin, 13% share in research papers… What is the share of Indian-origin Americans? Education – 35 of the top 50 colleges are at the top – More than 22,000 Indian-origin professors are teaching in American universities. – It is now normal for Indians to hold the positions of Dean and President of institutions like Harvard, Stanford. If we look at America’s top 50 colleges, Indian Americans are in leadership roles in 35 of them. That means every other top university in America has an Indian American in leadership. Health – Indian-origin ‘troubleshooters’ for America – There will be a shortage of 1.22 lakh doctors in America by 2032. – By 2027, 8 lakh nurses of America will leave the job. – Jobs in healthcare will increase by 10-20% by 2030, but not people. – Admission of Indians in medical school is increasing at about four times the average rate. – India is the second largest country that sends nurses to America. Indian Americans occupy the top 3% positions in big government agencies like CDC and NSF. These doctors often serve the most remote and deprived areas, where no one else wants to go.
