A suicide car bomb attack took place on a police station in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, killing 5 civilians and injuring 12 people, including a policeman.

According to Dawn, a car filled with explosives hit the rear of the police station, causing a massive explosion. After this there was firing for some time. The sound of the explosion was heard several kilometers away.

The explosion was so powerful that the sentry post of the police station was completely destroyed and a large part of the building was reduced to debris. Many nearby houses also suffered heavy damage and some collapsed, trapping many people under the debris.

The dead include four members of the same family. All the injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, where the condition of some remains critical.

Pakistan’s District Emergency Officer Bakhtullah Wazir said that ‘relief and rescue operations are going on. However, due to continuous rain there have been problems in the operation. The rescue teams started removing the debris only after the firing stopped.

Security forces have surrounded the entire area and started the clearance operation. At the same time, the number of casualties is expected to increase.
