On the afternoon of March 5, when devotees were gathering in the temple for worship, between 12 noon and 2 pm, Khalistan supporters started gathering on the road in front of the temple. Banned organization Sikh for Justice (SFJ) registered a protest outside Hindu temples. A similar demonstration was also proposed outside the Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Surrey, British Columbia, but Khalistanis were not allowed to demonstrate there. Eyewitnesses said that about 40 people were present in the demonstration. These people were standing behind the metal barricades installed on the roadside and waving yellow Khalistani flags. The protesters also had some controversial posters in their hands, on which ‘Wanted’ was written and photographs of some persons were also there. Maharaja told that a person present there informed him off-camera that each person was being given 100 Canadian dollars to join this demonstration. This claim quickly went viral on social media, raising serious questions on these demonstrations. Critics say that to show the Khalistani movement alive in Canada, the help of hired mob is now being used. Taking a dig at Canadian politics, Darshan Maharaja said that in the last 50 years, the leaders here have given protection to such elements in the greed for votes and donations. The result of that is that today these people have become unruly. Due to the sensitivity of the demonstration, Peel Regional Police remained on standby due to the tight security at the scene to prevent clashes. White police SUVs were continuously patrolling the roads around the temple. A safety zone of 100 meters was created to prevent any possible clash. Due to the promptness of the police, there was no violence or noise. Another interesting aspect of the protest was that despite such a sensitive issue, the Canadian media did not give coverage to the Khalistanis. The local Hindu community alleges that the Canadian media often ignores such cases. The Hindu community gave its sharp reaction. Hindu Canadian Foundation (HCF) and Triveni Temple administration have condemned this demonstration. Community leaders say that the sole purpose of such political demonstrations outside places of worship is to intimidate devotees and disturb peace. HCF said in a statement that we will protect our right to worship. No kind of threat or provocative action can make us retreat from our faith. Devotees visiting the temple also expressed displeasure that they were facing police barricades and protests to visit their own place of worship. A large section of the Sikh community also distanced itself from these protesters, saying that 20-25 people do not represent the entire community and they fully respect the temple.
