Representatives of Iran and America reached Pakistan’s capital Islamabad on Saturday for ceasefire talks. Here Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir welcomed both of them in different ways.
Vice President JD Vance led the meeting from the US side, while Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf led the meeting from the Iranian side.
Asim Munir was in army dress while receiving the Iranian delegation. Munir was wearing a normal suit while receiving the American delegation.

According to retired Major General Sanjay Meston, this step was to send a message. According to him, “Munir wants to show himself as a diplomat in front of America and a soldier in front of Iran.”
Defense expert Sandeep Unnithan said that wearing combat dress (military uniform) was an attempt to show strength in view of the recent tension with Iran. He said that there have been missile attacks and border conflicts between the two countries before, so this step was also for the cameras.

In 2024, Iran carried out drone and missile attacks in the Balochistan area of Pakistan. He claimed that he was targeting a terrorist organization named Jaish al-Adl.
In response, Pakistan took military action in Sistan-Baluchistan area of Iran. Later, after China’s intervention, tensions subsided, but relations remained sour.

An important thing is that the presence of the Army Chief in these meetings is considered unusual as per protocol. Usually on such occasions the President, Prime Minister or Foreign Minister is in the lead.
Retired Major General Sanjay Soi said that the real power in Pakistan lies with the army and Munir is showing it openly. According to him, “He wants to be seen in every international conversation and wants to show that he is the one who takes the decisions.”
Experts believe that through these meetings with Iran and America, Asim Munir showed diplomatic balance and made it clear that at present the real power in Pakistan lies with him.
