Counting of general elections continues in Nepal. Initial trends have come for 165 seats. Rapper and former mayor of Kathmandu Balen Shah’s Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has emerged as the largest party.
RSP has won 23 seats so far, while it is leading in 95 seats. This party was formed just 4 years ago by Rabi Lamichhane, a journalist.
Whereas former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s party CPN-UML has won only 1 seat so far, while it is ahead on 12 seats.
KP Oli himself is trailing Balen Shah by 25 thousand votes on Jhapa-5 seat. He has got only 10 thousand votes, whereas Balen Shah has got more than 39 thousand votes. Oli had won the 2017 and 2022 elections from Jhapa-5 seat.
After the violent protests in September last year, 58% people cast their votes in the elections held on March 5. It is expected to take 3 to 4 days to complete the counting of votes. The Election Commission has said that efforts will be made to complete the counting by March 9.

Former PM Pushp Kamal Dahal Prachanda won
Former Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is also among the few big leaders who were successful in winning this election.
He has been elected to the House of Representatives from Rukum East-1 seat. He won this seat by 10,240 votes.
His nearest rival was Leelamani Gautam of CPN-UML, who received 3,462 votes.
Prachanda was the coordinator in the Nepal Communist Party (NCP), formed after the merger of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist) and this party won this seat.
However, apart from his party, other traditional political parties like Nepali Congress and CPN-UML had a weak performance in this election.

Oli behind by 29 thousand votes
Balen Shah, a former mayor of Kathmandu, is in the race between the two prime ministerial candidates in Oli’s political stronghold. According to the counting of votes, Shah has got 39,284 votes, while Oli has got 10,293 votes. He is behind by about 29 thousand votes.
