Opposition parties in Bangladesh have accused Prime Minister Tariq Rahman of election irregularities. He says that Tariq Rehman is an engineer who manipulates the election results.

The opposition alleges that ‘engineering’ i.e. manipulation was done in the elections and due to this BNP got more than 200 seats. After almost 20 years, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) achieved a big victory in the general elections in Bangladesh.

The Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance of 11 parties and its ally National Citizen Party (NCP) have alleged that large-scale irregularities took place in many seats.

Tariq Rehman is 12th pass

NCP leader Naseeruddin Patwari first called Tariq Rehman an ‘engineer’ on Facebook. His post reached millions of people and was followed by a flood of memes and jokes on social media. Many people shared pictures created by AI, in which Tariq Rehman was shown wearing an engineer’s helmet.

Some people sarcastically wrote that ‘Engineer passed from London’, because Tariq Rehman had lived in exile in London for 17 years. In another post it was written that ‘Became an engineer without studying.’

According to media reports, in his affidavit, Tariq Rehman has stated his educational qualification as ‘Higher Secondary’ i.e. up to 12th.

Tariq Rehman took oath as PM on 17 February. A man became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh after 35 years.

Complaint lodged with the Election Commission

NCP leader Asif Mehmood claimed that he had evidence of tampering with the results. He said that in some places the winners were declared even before the counting of votes was completed and the figures were changed.

Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rehman also said that voting went well, but there were irregularities during counting. He has also filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission regarding 32 seats.

When Tariq Rehman was asked in the press conference on 14 February whether he did ‘engineering’ to win the election, he replied in a calm tone that his ‘engineering’ was only that he convinced people to vote in his favor.

Tariq Rehman is the son of former President and former Prime Minister.

Tariq Rehman is the son of former President Ziaur Rehman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. He joined Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1988. He gained recognition for his organizational work in the 2001 elections, but after 2006, he was accused of corruption and was arrested in 2007.
