- Brazil President Lula Visits India | Live Update 14 Ministers, 260 Companies Attend AI Summit

Brazilian President Lula da Silva reached New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon on his visit to India. He has come here to participate in the India AI Impact Summit 2026. On reaching Delhi, he was welcomed by Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margherita.
He will be in India from 18 to 22 February. This visit is taking place on the invitation of Prime Minister PM Modi. This time President Lula has brought with him a delegation of owners and executives of 260 companies. About 14 ministers have also arrived with him.
President Lula will participate in the second AI Impact Summit being held in New Delhi on February 19 and 20. Apart from this, there can also be talk on Mercur-India Free Trade Agreement i.e. FTA. Mercosur is a large trading group in South America, which includes many countries including Brazil.
Will hold bilateral meeting with PM Modi
President Lula will have an important bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi on 21 February. In this meeting, both the countries will review their relations and decide the future strategy. PM Modi will also organize a lunch in his honour.
Issues like trade and investment, defense cooperation, energy especially renewable energy, agriculture, health and medicines, critical minerals and rare earth minerals, science and technology, innovation, digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, space and people-to-people connectivity will be included in the talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Lula.
The two leaders will also discuss regional and global issues. These include issues like cooperation in multilateral fora, reform of the global rule order, issues related to the Global South, United Nations (UN) reforms, climate change and cooperation against terrorism.
During this visit, President of India Draupadi Murmu will meet President Lula and host a state banquet in his honour. Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will also meet him.

President Lula’s sixth visit to India
This is President Lula’s sixth visit to India. He first appeared as the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in 2004. He last came to India in September 2023 for the G20 summit.
Prime Minister Modi went on a state visit to Brazil’s capital Brasília in July 2025, which was the first state visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The two leaders also met during the G20 meeting in Johannesburg in November 2025.

President Lula came as the chief guest at the Indian Republic Day celebrations in 2004.
India-Brazil work together on forums like UN and BRICS
Relations between India and Brazil have been very good. In the year 2006, both the countries gave the status of strategic partnership to their relations. Both the countries believe in democracy and talk about peace and equality in the world. India and Brazil work together in major international forums like BRICS, G20, UN and World Trade Organization.
In the matter of defence, an agreement was signed between the two countries in 2003, which was approved in 2006. The Joint Defense Committee meeting was held in Brazil in July 2025. Military officers of both the countries keep visiting each other. Both are also working together in the field of space. India launched Brazilian satellite Amazonia-1 in 2021.
In terms of oil and gas, Brazil is India’s largest investment center in the Americas. Both the countries are also working together in the field of biofuel. Brazil is a co-founding member of the Global Biofuel Alliance.
Agriculture, food processing and animal husbandry are also important areas of cooperation between the two countries. Cow breeds like Gir and Kankrej from India were first sent to Brazil, which were developed according to the needs there.
Many Brazilian students and officers came to India and took training
Both the countries signed an agreement in the health sector in 2020. Ayurveda and yoga have been given a place as alternative treatments in the health policy of Brazil. An agreement was also signed in the field of digital technology in 2025, under which both the countries will share digital systems and solutions implemented on a large scale with each other.
India and Brazil are also working together on the issue of climate change. India actively participated in the United Nations Climate Conference held in Brazil.
Many Brazilian students and officials have come to India for training under technical cooperation and scholarship programmes. Cultural ties are also very strong. People are liking Indian culture, yoga, meditation and classical dance in Brazil. India’s first cultural center was opened in Sao Paulo in 2011.
Statues of Mahatma Gandhi have been installed in many cities of Brazil.
Mahatma Gandhi is given great respect in Brazil. His statues are installed in cities like Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Brasília. In 2025, Brazilian Acharya Jonas Masetti was honored with Padma Shri by the Government of India.
Indian films are also liked in Brazil and India was made the focus country at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival in 2024.
About 4,000 Indians live in Brazil. Most people settle in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. These people are involved in work like business, job and research.
