Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Monday morning. Shortly he will meet Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House. The biggest objective of PM Carney’s visit is the 10-year uranium supply agreement between India and Canada. It is being told that this deal could be worth around 3 billion dollars. According to BBC, if this agreement happens, it will be considered a major diplomatic and economic success for Carney. Canada is the second largest uranium producer in the world. The Nuclear Cooperation Agreement between India and Canada came into force in 2013, after which Canada started supplying uranium to India. India wants to buy more uranium for its rapidly growing nuclear power sector. Apart from this, in the conversation between the two Prime Ministers, issues like bringing the relations between the two countries back on track, strengthening energy cooperation, trade expansion and taking forward the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) will be discussed. According to Canadian government data, annual trade between the two countries is more than $21 billion. More than 600 Canadian companies are operating in India. The main exports from India to Canada include pharmaceuticals, gems and jewelery and marine products. Large Canadian pension funds have already made large investments in sectors such as real estate and logistics in India. According to reports, they have invested 100 billion dollars (about more than Rs 8 lakh crore) in India. Now Canada wants to increase this investment further. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says that there have sometimes been political differences between the two countries, but despite this, Canada will remain a reliable partner of India’s rapidly growing economy. Relations deteriorated after the murder of Nijjar. Relations between the two countries deteriorated after the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in the year 2023. Canada had accused India of killing Nijjar. Canada’s then PM Justin Trudeau said in Parliament that Canadian security agencies had found evidence that Indian government agents may have been involved in the murder. He called it an attack on Canada’s sovereignty. India had vehemently rejected these allegations. India said that Khalistani extremists and terrorists are openly active in Canada, who carry out activities against India and Canada does not take action against them. After this both the countries expelled many diplomats of each other. India temporarily halted visa services for Canadian citizens. Canada also canceled trade missions to India, and travel advisories were issued by both sides. Negotiations almost came to a halt and important discussions like CEPA came to a standstill. After Justin Trudeau stepped down from office and Mark Carney became Prime Minister (March 2025), both countries tried to improve relations.
