Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed in America-Israel attack. According to Iranian media Tasnim and Fars news agencies, on Saturday, Israel fired about 30 missiles at Khamenei’s office, killing Khamenei along with 40 commanders. Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and daughter-in-law were also killed in the attack.
According to media reports, after Khamenei’s death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as the new Supreme Leader of the country. Preparations were going on to make Mujtaba Khamenei the Supreme Leader for the last two years. However, this has not been officially confirmed yet.
In Iran, the way of electing the Supreme Leader (Rahbar) and running the country is a bit complicated. Iran and Vatican City are the only two countries in the world where religious leaders are the most powerful.

- Guardian Council: It consists of 6 religious leaders and 6 judges. Rahbars elect them every 6 years. This council can also stop the laws made by the Parliament.
- Parliament: It consists of 290 members, who are elected by the public every 4 years. Parliament makes laws, passes the budget and can take action against the President or ministers if necessary.
Khamenei had named Mujtaba as his successor before his death.

According to reports, the Expert Assembly of Iran had elected the new Supreme Leader on 26 September 2024 itself. Khamenei himself had called 60 members of the assembly and asked them to secretly decide on the successor. The assembly had unanimously agreed to the name of Mujtaba.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was born on 19 April 1939 in a cleric family in the religious city of Mashhad, Iran. He was against the policies of Khomeini Shah and advocated Islamic rule.
He was also arrested for giving a speech against Shah in 1963. Gradually he became a major face of the anti-government movement and was considered a trusted ally of Khomeini.
