Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed in America-Israel attack. According to Iranian media Tasnim and Fars news agencies, on Saturday, Israel fired about 30 missiles at Khamenei’s office, killing Khamenei along with 40 commanders. Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and daughter-in-law were also killed in the attack.

According to media reports, after Khamenei’s death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as the new Supreme Leader of the country. Preparations were going on to make Mujtaba Khamenei the Supreme Leader for the last two years. However, this has not been officially confirmed yet.

In Iran, the way of electing the Supreme Leader (Rahbar) and running the country is a bit complicated. Iran and Vatican City are the only two countries in the world where religious leaders are the most powerful.

Just as the Pope is the biggest leader in the Vatican, similarly the Supreme Leader is the biggest leader in Iran. ‘Rahbar’ means guide or one who shows the way. Assembly of 88 clerics in Iran chooses Supreme Leader

88 religious leaders keep an eye on Rahbar’s work

Rahbars in Iran decide on the country’s government, army, society and foreign policy. He is also the Commander‑in‑Chief of all armies. Till now only two people have come to this post. Khamenei was in power for 37 years. In Iran, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (Rahbar), the Assembly, the Guardian Council, the President and the Parliament jointly run the country. But the real power always remains with Rahbar.

  • Assembly of Experts: There are 88 religious leaders in it. The public elects its members every 8 years. This assembly elects Rahbar and keeps an eye on his work. If the rubber bands do not work properly then they can also be removed.
  • President: The President is the second most powerful leader of the country. They run the government and help in foreign policy, but the final decision always lies with Rahbar. To become President, the approval of the Guardian Council is required.
  • Guardian Council: It consists of 6 religious leaders and 6 judges. Rahbars elect them every 6 years. This council can also stop the laws made by the Parliament.
  • Parliament: It consists of 290 members, who are elected by the public every 4 years. Parliament makes laws, passes the budget and can take action against the President or ministers if necessary.

Khamenei had named Mujtaba as his successor before his death.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had named his second son Mujtaba Khamenei as his successor in the year 2024. Khamenei had taken this decision due to illness. Although this was not officially confirmed.

According to reports, the Expert Assembly of Iran had elected the new Supreme Leader on 26 September 2024 itself. Khamenei himself had called 60 members of the assembly and asked them to secretly decide on the successor. The assembly had unanimously agreed to the name of Mujtaba.

Now after the news of Khamenei’s death, Mujtaba can emerge as a contender for the Supreme Leader.

Then in the presidential election, fundamentalist leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won over reformist leader Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Reformist leaders claimed that there were massive irregularities in the elections. After this lakhs of people came out on the streets. It was named ‘Iranian Green Movement’. It lasted for two years, but the Iranian government suppressed it using force. It was said that Mujtaba Khamenei was the brain behind this.

It is said that people of Mujtaba are sitting in Iran’s intelligence and other government agencies. After Ibrahim Raisi became the President of Iran, Mujtaba’s stature increased significantly. Dispute between Iran and Israel

Nuclear Programme: America suspects that Iran may try to make nuclear weapons. For this reason he imposed restrictions on him many times. Iran says that its nuclear program is only for generating electricity and scientific research, not for making weapons.

Ballistic missile issue: Iran’s missile program remains the biggest obstacle in the negotiations on a nuclear deal. Iran clearly says that its ballistic missiles are necessary for its security and there will be no compromise on this issue. He considers this his “red line”.

Conflict over Israel: America is the biggest supporter of Israel. At the same time, Iran openly opposes Israel and accuses it of spreading instability in the region. This is the reason why the tension between the two countries increases further.

Interference in the Middle East: America alleges that Iran is increasing its influence by helping its supporting groups in countries like Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. Iran says it is protecting its interests and allies.

Economic restrictions: America has imposed strict economic sanctions on Iran, which has affected its economy. In response to this, Iran sometimes takes steps like accelerating its nuclear program or making strong statements.
