Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli attack on February 28.
The Ayatollah had held the position of supreme leader of Iran since the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989. During the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, Khamenei played a major role in the revolution when Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was ousted.
Khamenei was made president in 1981 after the Islamic Revolution. He remained in this post for 8 years. He was made the successor after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khomeini in 1989. According to the report, Ayatollah is a title of religious leader.
According to Islamic law of Iran, it is necessary to be an Ayatollah to become the Supreme Leader. That means only a religious leader can get the post of Supreme Leader.
