Palestinian criminals in Israel get death penalty without trial: Bill passed, hanging to take place in 90 days; Ministers celebrated by opening champagne in Parliament

Israel’s Parliament (Knesset) on Monday passed a bill to punish Palestinian criminals. Under this, Palestinians of the West Bank can be given direct death penalty for killing Israeli citizens or participating in terrorist activities. There will be no right of appeal in this. This law will apply to murders committed with nationalist or terrorist intentions. However, the court will also have the power to impose life imprisonment under special reasons. This bill was put forward by National Security Minister Ittamar Ben Gvir. After the bill was passed, Ben Gvir and other MPs celebrated by opening a bottle of champagne in the Parliament itself. He said, “Today Israel is changing the rules of the game, whoever kills Jews will not be able to breathe.” Ben Gvir had earlier threatened that his party would withdraw support from the government if the bill was not voted on. Under the law, hanging will be done within 90 days. The law states that hanging will be done within 90 days of the sentence being pronounced. Israel’s extremist right-wing groups had been demanding this bill for a long time. Military law applies to Palestinians in the West Bank. Through this bill, the rules of the military court have been changed, so that now the judge will be able to give death sentence even without unanimity. On the other hand, Israeli Jewish settlement residents who live in the West Bank are subject to Israeli civilian law. This means they are tried in normal Israeli civil courts. The result is that if two people commit the same crime in the same area, they will be given different punishments. This will increase the possibility of death penalty for Palestinians. Israeli organizations called the bill discriminatory; human rights organizations called it a racially discriminatory and vindictive policy. Opposing this bill, Israeli human rights and civil society organizations said that these laws will promote racial violence against Palestinians. Organizations described it as targeting Palestinians and giving immunity to Israelis. Opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the bill, calling it a surrender to Hamas. “We are not like Hamas, we are the complete opposite of Hamas,” he said. Petition filed in the Supreme Court against the bill: Immediately after the passing of the bill, Israel’s civil rights organization has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this bill. They have also demanded that it be rejected, calling it unconstitutional. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously opposed the bill, but after the Gaza ceasefire came into effect, he changed his stance and supported it in the final vote. The second case is of 1962, when Adolf Eichmann, the chief architect of the Holocaust, was hanged. In 1960, Eichmann was captured by Israeli intelligence agents in Argentina. After a long public trial in Jerusalem he was found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity. Israel’s Supreme Court rejected the appeal and he was hanged in a Jerusalem prison on the night of 31 May 1962. After this, the death penalty was almost completely stopped in Israel. Germany, France, Italy and Britain expressed concern over the bill. Germany, France, Italy and Britain have also expressed concern about this bill. He has said that this law can weaken Israel’s democratic values. The United Nations has already criticized military courts in the West Bank. He said this is a violation of the Palestinians’ rights to due process and a fair trial.
