Britain has made Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) mandatory for travelers coming from 85 countries from Wednesday. Under this rule, airlines will not allow boarding of passengers without valid ETA, e-Visa or other necessary documents.
The ETA scheme was launched in 2023. Under this, travelers who do not require a visa will have to apply online before traveling and get a pre-travel permit by paying a fee of 16 British pounds (about Rs 1970).
ETA is a digital entry permit required for foreign travelers who do not require a visa. It is electronically linked to the passport and is used for security checks of the traveller. Whereas e-Visa is a digital visa which will replace the paper visa sticker on the passport.
This was extended to European travelers in April 2024, but strict enforcement was not in place until now. It has come into full effect from 25th February. This new system will replace the paper visa stickers on the old passport.
British and Irish citizens, those holding dual citizenship and those who have the right to reside in Britain are exempt from this rule. Britain’s Migration and Citizenship Minister Mike Tapp said that this step has been taken to strengthen border security and make the system more modern.
Britain’s Migration Minister Mike Tapp said that the ETA scheme is an important part of strengthening the country’s border security. According to him, this will make the entry system more modern and effective, which will benefit both passengers and British citizens.
