New rules ready for America’s AI companies, government will have to give the right for ‘any legitimate use’

The US government has prepared new strict guidelines for Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies. Under these rules, companies that want to work with the US government will have to grant a permanent license to the US government for any lawful use of their AI systems.
According to the Financial Times report, the new guidelines have been prepared by the General Services Administration (GSA) and will apply to civilian government contracts. Its aim is to make the procurement process of AI services by government institutions more stringent and secure.
This proposal comes at a time when tensions have increased between the US Defense Department and AI company Anthropic. The Pentagon recently declared Anthropic a supply-chain risk and barred government contractors from using its technology in military operations.
As per draft rules:
- AI companies must grant the government an irrevocable license for all lawful uses of their models.
- Companies cannot knowingly add political or ideological leanings to the output of their AI systems.
- They must also disclose whether their AI models have been modified to conform to any foreign government or non-US regulations.
