Pakistan Army conducted airstrike in the border areas of Afghanistan early on Sunday. According to Al-Jazeera, the Pakistani army claimed that seven camps and bases associated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Islamic State were targeted.
The Pakistan government called it a retaliatory attack after recent suicide attacks. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a statement saying that this was an intelligence based operation. Pakistan said, ‘We have strong evidence that the attacks were carried out by a network operating from the soil of Afghanistan.’
According to Afghan media Tolo News, the attack targeted a house in Nangarhar, due to which 23 people of the same family were buried under the debris. So far only four people have been evacuated. The family was sleeping at the time of the attack, so they did not get a chance to escape.
According to the American human rights organization International Human Rights Foundation (IHRF), 16 people died in this. Women and children are also included in this. However, official information about the figures has not been revealed yet.

Afghanistan said – will give a strong reply at the right time
Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry has warned Pakistan to respond at the right time. The ministry described these attacks as a violation of Afghanistan’s privacy policy. According to Afghan sources, a drone attack took place on a religious school in Paktika and action was also taken in Nangarhar province.
Pakistan has said that they attacked terrorist positions, but according to Afghan sources civilians were harmed.
Pakistan has been demanding from the Taliban government for a long time that it should not allow its land to be used by any terrorist organization. Islamabad alleges that TTP is operating from Afghanistan, while the Taliban denies these allegations.
Pakistan’s demand- international community should put pressure on Taliban
Pakistan has appealed to the international community to put pressure on the Taliban under the agreement signed with the US in Doha in 2020, so that Afghan land is not used against other countries.
The 2020 Doha Agreement is also known as the peace effort in Afghanistan. It was signed between the US and the Taliban on 29 February 2020 in Doha, the capital of Qatar. This agreement was made to end the war going on in Afghanistan since 2001 and to pave the way for the withdrawal of American forces.
The Taliban pledged that it will not allow Afghan soil to be used by any group or individual that poses a threat to the security of the United States and its allies.
This specifically included a promise to sever ties with al-Qaeda and other international terrorist organizations and not allow them to recruit, train, fund, or carry out attacks in Afghanistan. After the agreement, America withdrew its forces in 2021, after which the Taliban rapidly captured Kabul.

Hours before the airstrike, a suicide attack on a security convoy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district killed two soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel.
On February 16, a vehicle loaded with explosives was rammed into a security post in Bajaur, Pakistan. 11 soldiers and one child died in this attack. Officials described the attacker as an Afghan citizen.
Earlier on February 6, there was a suicide attack in the Shia Mosque (Imambada) during Friday prayers in Islamabad. According to Pakistani newspaper The Dawn, 31 people have died and 169 have been injured in the attack. Islamic State had taken responsibility for this attack.

Tension increased after violent clashes in October
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained tense since the death of soldiers and civilians from both sides in border clashes in October. A ceasefire was brokered by Qatar on October 19, but talks in Istanbul, Turkey failed to reach a formal agreement.
In fact, on October 9, there were air strikes on Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) bases in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Taliban said that these attacks were carried out by Pakistan. Although Pakistan did not clearly say that it carried out these attacks, it warned the Taliban not to give shelter to TTP on its soil.

TTP becomes the biggest threat to Pakistan
Since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the TTP has been waging a guerrilla war against Pakistani security forces. TTP is being considered the biggest terrorist threat to Pakistan in the last twelve years. Pakistan alleges that TTP fighters return to Pakistan after receiving training from Afghanistan across the border and attack.
Although Taliban claims that it does not support TTP. According to Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies, terrorist attacks in the country have become the highest since 2015 and TTP is the main reason for this. Due to these attacks in the Global Terrorism Index, Pakistan has reached second place in the list of terrorism affected countries.

TTP formed in response to American attack
- US attack in 2001: Due to the US attack in Afghanistan, Afghan Taliban, Al-Qaeda and other fighters started taking shelter in FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) of Pakistan. Pakistan formed an alliance with the US and launched operations against al-Qaeda linked fighters in FATA.
- 2002-2007: The Pakistani army carried out several operations in FATA, causing anger among local Pashtun tribes. They considered it an attack on their autonomy.
- Lal Masjid operation in 2007: The Pakistani Army’s operation on the Red Mosque in Islamabad in July 2007 became a major trigger point. This increased the feeling of unity among many Jihadi groups.
- Formation of TTP in December 2007: Many small jihadi groups united as an organization under the leadership of Baitullah Mehsud. Its purpose was jihad against the Pakistani government and army, implementation of Sharia, cooperation in the fight against American forces in Afghanistan. The TTP received support from the Afghan Taliban and al-Qaeda, but it was against the state of Pakistan.
Why fight between Pakistan and TTP?
- After America’s attack on Afghanistan in 2001, Pakistan supported America. This angered TTP, who considered it against Islam.
- TTP believes that the Pakistan government does not believe in true Islam, hence it attacks against it.
- TTP has deep links with the Afghan Taliban. Both groups support each other.
- After the Afghan Taliban came to power in 2021, Pakistan launched attacks in Afghanistan targeting TTP.
Pakistan ranks second in Global Terrorism Index
According to the Global Terrorism Index 2025, Pakistan has become the second most terrorism affected country in the world after Burkina Faso, whereas in 2024 it was at the fourth position.
- TTP attacks have increased by 90%.
- There has been a 60% increase in attacks by Baloch Army (BLA).
- Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) has now started targeting Pakistani cities as well.
According to the report, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are the most terror affected areas of Pakistan. 90% of the total terrorist incidents across the country took place in this area.
In the report, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan was described as the most dangerous terrorist organization of Pakistan for the second consecutive year. In 2024, this group carried out 482 attacks, which resulted in 558 deaths, which is 91% more than in 2023.
There has been tension between the two countries before
There is a long standing dispute between Afghanistan and Pakistan regarding the Durand Line. Both countries keep accusing each other of attacks and hiding terrorists. Tension has increased further after Taliban took control of Afghanistan government in 2021.
