World Updates: Trump said – wanted to name Gulf of Mexico after himself, controversy would have increased so left it

Former US President Donald Trump revealed in an interview that he had once considered naming the Gulf of Mexico ‘Gulf of Trump’, but later abandoned the decision. He said it probably wouldn’t have worked and could have escalated the controversy.

Trump told in an interview with Fox News that this decision was part of his bigger plan. Under this, he had ordered to change the name of this gulf to ‘Gulf of America’. He implemented this change by signing an executive order at the beginning of his second term, on January 20, 2025.

Under this order, all government agencies within America were instructed to adopt the new name. The US Geological Survey also recorded this change in its records.

However, this decision was criticized internationally. Especially Mexico opposed it. Its President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the name Gulf of Mexico has been in use for centuries and is recognized all over the world.
