French President Emmanuel Macron has said that respect is very important in relations between countries. His statement came at a time when US President Donald Trump leaked private messages between the two leaders.
Macron, who is on a three-day visit to India, said this in the show of Indian podcaster Raj Shamani. He was asked how he felt when his private messages were leaked. On this, Macron did not say anything directly by taking Trump’s name, but definitely said that mutual respect is necessary in diplomacy.
Macron said that whether countries agree or disagree with each other, their views should be expressed with respect. There is nothing wrong in expressing disagreement, but it should be done in the right way. Macron took a jibe at Trump and said that some leaders seem to be going backward instead of moving forward.

Trump had leaked Macron’s personal message on January 20. In that message, Macron told Trump that he could not understand what Trump wanted to do regarding Greenland.
He also talked about working together further and suggested hosting the G7 meeting. He also said that countries like Ukraine, Denmark, Syria and Russia can be included in this meeting.
Macron said – no need for violence and insult
Macron also said in the podcast that in a democracy, people have the right to change their leaders, so there is no need for violence and insults. They are committed to fighting against hate speech and violence in society.
When the French President was asked whether the world needs to be afraid of America’s current leadership, he said that in today’s situation it is a bit surprising that instead of moving forward, some leaders seem to be going backwards.
Trump threatened 200% tariffs on French wines
Trump and Macron have been at loggerheads for a long time, but recently the dispute escalated when France rejected Trump’s invitation to join the ‘Board of Peace’.
This board has been created for the development of Gaza. Many countries, including France, expressed concern that there is no clear mention of Gaza and the Israel-Palestine conflict in the board’s document.
After this, Trump warned of imposing 200% tariff on French wine and Champagne and said that this would put pressure on Macron. Later, Trump also shared private messages between the two on his social media platform Truth Social, in which Macron expressed concern over America’s interest in Greenland.
French President Macron had said in Davos last month that France believes in respect, not threats. It is wrong to threaten to impose further sanctions on Europe.

There were many tensions between Trump and Macron
Tension has been seen several times in the recent past between US President Donald Trump and French President Macron.
1. Board of Peace controversy (2026)
When Trump created a ‘Board of Peace’ for the development of Gaza, France refused to join it. Many countries, including France, said that there is no clear mention of Gaza and Israel-Palestine conflict in the board’s document.
2. Rhetoric regarding Greenland (2026)
Differences emerged between the two leaders regarding America’s interest in Greenland. In the message shared by Trump, Macron had expressed his concern about Greenland.
3. Tension regarding trade and tariffs
Trump had threatened to impose heavy tariffs on French products, especially wine and Champagne, saying this would put pressure on France. France had expressed displeasure on this.
4. NATO and defense spending (2018–2019)
Trump repeatedly says that European countries are spending less on NATO and the burden is more on America. Macron once even called NATO “brain-dead”. Trump reacted strongly to this statement and there was a public debate between the two.
5. Digital tax controversy (2019)
France had decided to impose digital tax on big American tech companies. Trump called it a move against American companies and threatened to impose tariffs on French goods. Later the matter was resolved to some extent through talks.
6. Iran nuclear deal (2018)
Trump had taken America out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This was a nuclear deal, which was signed between Iran and the world’s major powers in 2015. Macron wanted the agreement to remain and even tried to persuade Trump, but he did not succeed.
7. Paris Climate Agreement (2017)
Trump had decided to withdraw America from the Paris Climate Agreement. Macron openly opposed this and gave the slogan ‘Make Our Planet Great Again’, which was considered a sarcasm on Trump’s election slogan.
