The world’s first arrest took place 2 months after the revelations of American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein files. British police arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, King Charles’s younger brother, on Thursday morning.
After about 12 hours of arrest, the police let Andrew go to his home at 1:15 pm Indian time. However, investigation into this matter will still continue. The police had not given prior information to the royal family about this action.
If proven guilty, Andrew could face life imprisonment. 66 year old Andrew also had a birthday on Thursday. He is accused of misuse of public office. In fact, Virginia Giuffre, a victim in the Epstein case, had alleged that Andrew had sexually abused her in 2001 when she was 17 years old.
However, Andrew denied all of Griffey’s allegations. Giuffre died in April 2025. The reason for this was said to be suicide.
Police in plain clothes had arrived on Thursday morning to arrest Andrew. He has become the first royal member to be arrested in modern history.
Police could have kept Andrew in custody for 96 hours
The police could have detained Andrew for a maximum of 96 hours, but for this permission would have had to be taken from senior police officers and the court. Generally this happens rarely.
In most cases any suspect is kept for 12 or 24 hours. After that, either a case is registered against him or he is left pending further investigation.
The police can view Andrew’s computer, files and photos. They can also search houses or places where they live, own or control.
Andrew may be sentenced to life imprisonment

It is believed that this matter is related to the time when Andrew was Britain’s trade envoy. He was appointed to this post in 2001, but resigned after 10 years. At that time his name came into controversy over his links with American criminal Jeffrey Epstein.

King Charles said – law will take its course

He also said that while the investigation is ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the matter.
When Prime Minister Keir Starmer was questioned before the announcement of Andrew’s arrest, he told the BBC that no one is above the law, anyone who has any information should testify.
Andrew was stripped of his royal titles
King Charles withdrew the title of ‘Prince’ and all royal titles from his younger brother Andrew in October last year. He was also ordered to vacate his luxurious home ‘Royal Lodge’ in Windsor.
