An Indian citizen has been detained by immigration officials in New Jersey, America. He has been charged with sexual assault of a girl under 13 years of age and shoplifting. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a statement on social media identifying the accused as Vodela Yashasvi Kottapalli. According to the agency, he was living in America illegally and criminal cases are pending against him. ICE has said that the accused will be kept in custody until the deportation process is completed under US immigration law. However, the agency has not shared detailed information about the crimes. This action has taken place at a time when there is a sharp increase in the cases of deportation of Indian citizens from America. The central government had told in Parliament that more than 3,800 Indian citizens were sent back from America in 2025. The government has not clarified how many of these cases involved criminal charges and how many were deported simply for violating immigration rules. U.S. officials say noncitizens who are accused or convicted of serious crimes, especially those involving minors, are given priority for detention and deportation.
