Notorious drug kingpin Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes alias ‘El Mencho’ was killed in an operation by security forces in Mexico. After this, violence broke out in 13 out of 31 states. Roadblocks were set up at many places, vehicles and more than 20 government bank branches were set on fire. There is a situation of lockdown in Jalisco. This city is included in the host cities of FIFA 2026. There have been at least 32 deaths in different cities, of which 25 are soldiers. During the operation, armored vehicles and heavy weapons including rocket launchers were seized. According to Mexico analyst David Mora of the International Crisis Group, this action is a turning point both in terms of the Sheinbaum government’s strictness against the cartels and in terms of US pressure. The violence could continue if relatives of ‘El Mencho’ take command of the cartel. Experts fear a repeat of Colombia’s history of car bombs, assassinations and plane attacks in the 1990s. In Mexico, the army conducted an operation on Sunday and killed the country’s biggest drug mafia leader El Mencho. After this, arson and violence started across the country. Mencho’s supporters took revenge by blocking the highway and vandalizing vehicles. Such violent incidents have happened before. In Mexico, when a major cartel leader has been captured or killed, there has been a violent confrontation between the government and the cartel. Many times a power struggle breaks out within the gang, which makes the situation worse. Experts say that before the death of El Mencho, the same thing had happened in the country during the arrest of Sinaloa Cartel leader El Chapo in 2016 and the arrest of El Mayo in 2024. In 2019, when El Chapo’s son Ovidio Guzman was captured, his accomplices held the city of Culiacan hostage for hours and the government had to release him. Therefore, there is still fear that the situation may worsen. Now it will depend on whether the Jalisco Cartel has a clearly decided new leader or not. If internal fighting starts, the bloodshed may increase further. Trump was pressurizing Mexico to take action. Jalisco Cartel (CJNG) cartel was formed in 2009. Under El Mencho’s leadership it became Mexico’s largest drug network. It sent synthetic drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine and, in recent years, fentanyl to the US. According to the New York Times report, Menches’ death may improve relations between Mexico and America. US President Trump was pressurizing Mexico to take strict action against the cartel. Trump had warned that if strict measures were not taken he could also consider military action. In February this year, the Trump Administration declared the cartel a foreign terrorist organization. The Mexican government has clearly said that the American attack will violate the country’s sovereignty, but cooperation between the two countries has increased at the level of intelligence. Mexico is considered the hub of the world’s largest drug smuggling network, from where extremely dangerous drugs like cocaine, heroin, meth and fentanyl reach America. According to American agencies, the largest supply of drugs in the country is through Mexican cartels. America is the world’s largest drug market. Every year millions of people become victims of drug addiction and thousands of deaths occur due to drugs like fentanyl. There is constant pressure on the US government to take strict measures against drug trafficking and that is why it keeps an eye on the cartels present in Mexico. On the other hand, the cartels have become so powerful in Mexico that in many areas they challenge the police and the government. Many times even the local administration is unable to stop them due to armed gangs, threats, corruption and violence. Many cartels run themselves like shadow governments. Trump has also threatened to eliminate drug cartels, after taking action on Venezuela, President Donald Trump threatened that his administration will soon initiate action to target drug cartels on the ground. Trump had claimed in an interview with Fox News that Mexico was controlled by drug cartels. These are causing the death of 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh people every year in America. He said that smuggling of drugs through sea route has been stopped by 97%, so now action will be taken on land. However, he did not provide any further details about the plans. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has given a strong response to Trump’s statements. After Maduro’s arrest, he said that America is not the owner of any area. New Generation Cartel also has machine guns and tanks. According to a report by The Guardian, Mexico’s largest Sinaloa Cartel has more than 600 planes and helicopters. This number is five times more than Mexico’s largest airline, Aero Mexico. Cartels are now focusing more on drones and armored vehicles. Such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has groups equipped with machine guns, tanks and body armour. Overall, the cartels’ private armies, or members, were estimated at 160,000 to 185,000 in 2022–2023, making them the fifth largest employer in Mexico. According to a 2022 report by the Mexican Interior Ministry, the cartels possess a stockpile of assault rifles such as AK-47 and M-80. Every year, more than 20 thousand assault rifles are recovered by security agencies from the possession of drug cartels. ———————— Also read this news… A young man entering Trump’s resort was shot, died: A young man who was trying to enter US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort with a gun and fuel can was shot by security personnel.
