A case of hate crime against Punjabis has come to light in Canada. Here a local youth pushed an elderly Punjabi man. He asked the old man to go from Canada to Punjab. He also said what are you doing in my country. This incident happened on Friday in Woodstock, Canada.

When the young man misbehaved with the old man, he was roaming outside the house. Its video has also surfaced. In which the accused youth is wearing a mask. He is seen making racial comments at the old man.
Seeing this incident, other people present there immediately called the police. After which the police arrested the accused by throwing him on the ground.

There was no statement from the old man’s family either. However, people have thanked the police for their immediate action.

Three days ago, two vehicles parked outside the house of a youth from Amritsar in Ontario, Canada were set on fire by unknown assailants. Within no time both the cars were completely burnt to ashes.
However, it is a matter of relief that the fire was controlled in time, due to which the house was saved from major damage. In this incident, one of the accused is also seen getting burnt while setting fire on CCTV. Slogans like Go Back were also written on the wall of the house by the attackers. It is feared that this may not just be an incident of arson, but also a possible hate-motivated attack.

Around 9 lakh Punjabis living in Canada
Let us tell you that Sikhs constitute about 2.1% of the total population of Canada. This works out to around Rs 9 lakh. Canadian Punjabis are approximately 81.4 per cent Sikh, 6.9 per cent Hindu and 6.8 per cent Muslim. Punjabi has become the third most spoken language in Canada after English and French. If we talk about Brampton, there are approximately 1 lakh 44 thousand Punjabi people here. This is approximately 22 percent of the total population of the city. According to Canada Census 2021, currently around 60 to 70 Punjabi families are living here.
Hate speech increased in Canada in 5 years
80 percent Sikhs faced hate speech- On April 20, 2026, the World Sikh Organization (WSO) released Canada’s first anti-Sikh hate report. According to this, 80 percent of Sikhs believe that hatred against them has increased in the last 5 years. 65 percent of Sikhs reported facing racial comments in recent months.
Online hate speech against Punjabis increased- The use of racial memes and derogatory language targeting Punjabi students and immigrants has increased on social media platforms. Especially after changes in immigration policies. In online hate speech, hatred is being spread by portraying Punjabis as a burden on Canada’s resources, which is creating an atmosphere of insecurity in the community.
Soft targets made of turban and religious identity- The WSO report revealed that 91 percent of turban-wearing Sikhs faced derogatory comments or hate speech in public places because of their religious identity. In April, several incidents were reported in Ontario and British Columbia where Sikhs were targeted as foreigners because of their dress.
Hate speech increased due to protests against increase in work permit- After Canada tightened the asylum rules in April 2026 and the sword of deportation hung on more than 9 thousand Punjabis, hate speech against them has increased at the local level. Punjabi students are facing slogans like go back and hate speeches during public protests.
What is the contribution of Punjabis in Canada…
- 20 percent stake in trucking industry: Punjabis have a big role in the economy of Canada. The Punjabi community alone accounts for about 20 percent of Canada’s trucking industry. They are the backbone of Canada’s supply chain. Apart from this, more than 1.2 lakh businesses in Canada are in the hands of Punjabis, creating thousands of jobs locally.
- Punjabis have 70 percent share in blueberry cultivation: Blueberries are cultivated in areas such as Abbotsford, British Columbia. Punjabis have more than 70 percent share in it. Punjabi farmers have helped Canada gain global recognition in agricultural exports by making the barren lands here fertile.
- Punjabis are also contributing in politics: The representation of Punjabis in the House of Commons, the Parliament of Canada, is more than the proportion of their population. Currently around 15 to 18 Punjabi MPs are shaping the policies of Canada. Leaders like Harjit Singh Sajjan and Anita Anand have held important ministries like national defense and public services.
- Gurudwaras are giving food to the hungry: According to data for 2023-2024, Punjabi Gurdwaras have been the largest contributors to Canada’s food banks and emergency services. Punjabis have provided free food and shelter to millions of people during the COVID-19 pandemic and recent floods.
