📌 What is this service?

The Indian passport is an official document issued by the Government of India to its citizens for international travel. It serves as proof of identity and nationality. Passports are issued under the Passports Act, 1967, and are administered by the Ministry of External Affairs through its network of Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Indian missions abroad.

There are different types of passports: ordinary (for general citizens), diplomatic (for diplomats), and official (for government officials). This guide focuses on the ordinary passport.

👤 Who can use it?

• Indian citizens – any citizen of India can apply for a passport.
• Minors – parents or guardians can apply on behalf of minors; a separate minor passport is issued.
• Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) – they may be eligible for an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card instead, but can also apply for a passport if they renounce foreign citizenship.
• Renunciation of foreign citizenship – former Indian citizens who have acquired foreign citizenship must surrender their Indian passport and apply for an OCI card.

📄 Documents usually required

• Proof of identity – Aadhaar, Voter ID, PAN card, or government-issued photo ID.
• Proof of address – Aadhaar, Voter ID, utility bills, rent agreement, or bank statement.
• Proof of date of birth – Birth certificate, school leaving certificate, or Aadhaar.
• Passport‑sized photographs – white background, specific dimensions (2” x 2”).
• Additional documents – for tatkal application, re‑issue, or if there is a change in personal details.
• Self‑attested copies of all documents are typically required.

🛠️ Basic steps

1. Online registration – Visit the official Passport Seva portal and register with a valid email and mobile number.
2. Fill the application form – Complete the online form with accurate personal, contact, and family details.
3. Pay the fee – Pay the applicable fee online via net banking, credit/debit card, or UPI.
4. Book an appointment – Schedule a visit to the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office.
5. Visit the PSK – Carry all original documents and self‑attested copies. Submit biometrics and photograph.
6. Police verification – After submission, a police verification will be conducted at your address.
7. Passport issuance – Once verified, the passport is printed and dispatched via speed post or can be collected from the PSK.

Timelines vary – normal applications take about 30‑45 days, while tatkal applications can be processed in 1‑3 days (subject to verification).
