World Updates: Protest against PM Balen Shah intensifies in Nepal, resentment over tax increase and ban on student union

Within a few weeks of the formation of the new government in Nepal, protests against it have intensified. Students, political parties and common people have taken to the streets in many cities including Kathmandu. Some decisions and controversies of the government have increased this dissatisfaction. The biggest issue is the custom duty on goods coming from India. The government has imposed compulsory duty on goods costing more than Rs 100. People in the border areas say that this will affect their daily needs, as they have been dependent on cross-border shopping for a long time. The protesters allege that this decision imposes additional economic burden on the general public. The second big controversy is regarding student organizations. Resentment among the students has increased due to the strict stance of the government. Student leaders say that instead of talks, the government is adopting a policy of pressure and restriction. Thousands of students are protesting across the country. At many places, students took to the streets in school uniforms, indicating that the movement is spreading rapidly. Apart from this, the allegations against Home Minister Sudan Gurung have also increased the problems of the government. He is accused of having disproportionate assets and suspicious financial transactions. The opposition and protesters are demanding his resignation.
