US President Donald Trump has shared a graphic on Truth Social showing Venezuela as America’s ’51st state’. This post came out at a time when Trump was visiting China. A day before this, Venezuela’s interim President Delsey Rodriguez had said that her country would never consider becoming the 51st state of America. Trump told Fox News on Monday that he was ‘seriously considering’ making Venezuela a new US state. Referring to Venezuela’s oil reserves, he said that the people there like him. In response, Delsey Rodriguez said during a hearing at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, “We will continue to defend our integrity, sovereignty, independence and history.” Rodriguez took power as interim president after US forces ousted former President Nicolas Maduro in January. Under his leadership, Venezuela has taken steps towards reopening the oil and mining sector to foreign companies. Meanwhile, the US Energy Department claimed that 13.5 kg of uranium has been removed from a research reactor in Venezuela. According to the department, this was a joint operation of America, Britain and Venezuela. The International Atomic Energy Agency also confirmed this.
