Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has made serious allegations against the former head of the interim government Mohammad Yunus in an interview. He said that the interim government formed after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024 had tried to remove him.

Shahabuddin told that it was he who administered the oath of office to Yunus on August 8, 2024 and Yunus continued to work as the de facto Prime Minister till February 16, 2026.

He said that the Yunus government canceled his foreign tours twice. Once he was stopped from going to Kosovo and second time on the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, the Foreign Ministry sent a letter saying that the President was busy.

The President said that he was not even informed about the Bangladesh-US trade agreement signed a few days before the elections. He said that it is a constitutional responsibility to inform the President about any such agreement, but Yunus did not do so.

President Mohammad Shahabuddin had sworn in Mohammad Yunus as the head of the interim government on 8 August 2024, 3 days before this i.e. on 5 August, Sheikh Hasina was overthrown.

Shahabuddin said- Yunus did not follow the constitution

Shahabuddin alleged that Yunus did not follow any provision of the Constitution and the interim government passed ordinances that were not needed. Yunus did not even inform him about his foreign tours and went abroad 14-15 times, but never informed the President.

He also said that he was not told anything about the specifics of the Bangladesh-US trade agreement.

He referred to the night of 22 October 2024 when the mob had surrounded the Rashtrapati Bhavan ‘Bangabhavan’ and demanded his removal. He said that that night was very scary for him.

PM Tariq Rehman described as honest and gentle

Shahabuddin said that when attempts were being made to remove him, a senior leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assured him of support. The leader said that he wants to maintain the constitutional system and is not in favor of removing the President by any unconstitutional means.

The President described current Prime Minister and BNP chief Tariq Rehman as honest and gentle. He said that apart from BNP and its allies, the chiefs of all three branches of the army also fully supported him. According to him, the army chiefs said that he was the head of the security forces and his defeat would mean the defeat of the entire army.

Shahabuddin’s tenure is till April 2028. Earlier in December 2025, he had told news agency Reuters that he was feeling isolated during the interim government and wanted to resign after the elections.

America reduced tariff on Bangladesh to 19%

Bangladesh and the US have signed a new trade agreement in February 2026. Its objective is that both the countries should buy and sell more goods from each other and strengthen trade relations. It is not just a matter of reducing tariffs, but both the countries have also agreed to open their markets a little more to each other.

Under this agreement, America has reduced the tariff on many goods coming from Bangladesh to about 19%, which was earlier up to 35%.

Its direct benefit will be that clothes and other products of Bangladesh will be sold cheaper in America than before. Especially the readymade garment industry is expected to get a big benefit from this, because America is its big customer.

In return, Bangladesh will also buy more goods from America, such as oil-gas, grains and some military equipment. The meaning is clear that both the countries have decided that they will increase trade with each other.

Rahman government can set up a commission of inquiry against Yunus

This is not the first time that such allegations have been made against Mohammad Yunus. One week it was reported in the media report that while Mohammad Yunus was in the government, the wealth of his ministers had increased. Yunus’s wealth himself had increased by about 11% in a year.

Yunus’s assets now total Rs 12.5 crore, an increase of about Rs 1 crore 30 lakh. Yunus has seen the highest increase in wealth among the top 4 ministers of the interim government.

Housing Minister Adilur Rehman’s assets increased by Rs 1 crore 23 lakh. The wealth of 18 out of 21 ministers of Yunus increased. According to sources, the new PM Rehman can form a committee to investigate the increase in the assets of the ministers of the interim government.

Amidst all this, Yunus is now preparing to settle in Paris again. Let us tell you that Yunus is the only Nobel Prize winner of Bangladesh. Yunus, a big name in the micro finance sector in Bangladesh, had corruption cases registered during the Sheikh Hasina government. But Yunus withdrew the cases after forming his government.
