Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurug resigned from his post on Wednesday. Amidst the questions raised on his investments and shares, he took this decision taking moral responsibility. According to ANI, he said that it was necessary to step down to ensure a fair investigation and to avoid conflict of interest.
Gurug wrote in a Facebook post that he took seriously the recent questions raised regarding his financial transactions and shares. “For me, morality is bigger than any position and public trust is the biggest strength,” he said.
Gurung was working as Home Minister since March 26. This is the second case in the new government of Nepal, when a minister has had to step down. Earlier on April 9, Labor, Employment and Social Security Minister Deepak Kumar Sah was removed on charges of indiscipline.

Controversy regarding relations with money laundering accused
According to local media reports, questions were raised about Gurung’s relationship with a businessman Deepak Bhatt. Deepak Bhatt has been arrested on charges of money laundering.
Bhatt is being investigated on money laundering charges, after which questions were also raised on Gurung’s financial activities. Gurung said that the Gen Z movement is demanding transparency and accountability in the country.
He said, “When questions are raised on the government formed by the sacrifice of my 46 colleagues, the answer is morality.” Gurung also appealed to the media, citizens and youth to follow the path of honesty and truth.
Gurung was the main face of Gen Z movement in Nepal.
Gurung was one of the prominent faces of the Gen Z movement that took place in September 2025. Although his age is 36 years, the question also arose that he is not a part of Gen Z.
On March 27, he was made the Home Minister in the Rashtriya Swatantra Party government led by Balendra Shah. The very next day of his appointment, he had ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
Both the leaders were arrested on the morning of 28 March. According to the police, the action was taken on the recommendation of a commission of inquiry into the cases of deaths due to negligence that took place on September 8, the first day of the Gen Z protests. However, both were later released.
Controversial decisions of Balen Shah government
Strictness on goods coming from India- The new government is imposing mandatory duty on goods costing more than Rs 100. Border people and traders say that this decision is an additional economic burden on the general public.
Ban on student politics- The government has imposed a complete ban on student unions and political activities in colleges. Students say that this is a violation of their democratic rights.
Action against former leaders- As soon as he came to power, he ordered investigation and arrest against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and other big leaders in cases of corruption and old deaths, which some people are calling vendetta politics.
Changes in education- The decision to end traditional examinations till Class 5 also remained controversial.
